A typical step in footing beam detail, drawn in section at 1:20, showing how a footing beam changes level to follow sloping ground or brick and block coursing. The step is set out to suit the brick/block courses, with extra N10 ties at 300mm centres through the step and 3 continuation bars each face at the same size as the beam bars, carried down onto a concrete pier – the arrangement that keeps the reinforcement continuous where the beam offsets vertically. The note requires steps to occur at piers only, and a vertical brick joint over where the step exceeds 600mm.

It is a reusable structural standard you drop into a footing plan and dimension from the engineer’s schedule, rather than detailing the stepped cage each time.
